Mitti De Baway: Cast, Story, Timings and Where to Watch Mahira Khan's New Drama

··6 min read
Key art: Green Entertainment / Multiverse Entertainment

Mitti De Baway is the drama Mahira Khan chose for her return to television, and it's not the one anyone expected. It's a Punjabi period drama about a love that curdles into revenge, set between the 1990s and the present day, and Mahira plays the villain. It's also one of Green Entertainment's biggest productions: Faiza Iftikhar writing, Syed Wajahat Hussain directing, and Wahaj Ali opposite her.

The opening episodes have landed hard. It was reported to have crossed 50 million YouTube views within two episodes, and Billo has become one of the most talked-about characters of the season.

The supporting cast includes Sohail Ahmed, Samiya Mumtaz, Amar Khan, Junaid Khan, Hina Afridi, Uzma Hassan and Noor ul Hassan. Their characters haven't been fully revealed yet, and we'll add them here as the story brings them forward.

One early surprise is how much of the drama rests on its younger leads. Aena Khan and Fazal Hussain carry the flashback timeline, and viewers have praised them for building their own versions of Billo and Bala instead of imitating Mahira and Wahaj.

What is Mitti De Baway about?

At its heart it's a love story across a class divide that goes badly wrong. In the 1990s, Billo (Bilqees Bano) is the spirited daughter of a respected family in Wazirabad, and Bala is a gifted dhol player from the other end of the social ladder. They fall for each other. Arranged marriages, family crises and the gap between their worlds get in the way.

Sixteen years later, Bala comes out of prison, and Billo has become a powerful woman who presents herself as reformed, even spiritual. The drama cuts between the two timelines, and the gap between them is the hook: something turned that love into this much hatred, and the story is in no hurry to say what.

New episodes air every Wednesday and Thursday, and we update these recaps each week.

Mahira Khan as Billo: why fans call her "Lady Zamil"

Mahira Khan has spent most of her career playing women the audience is meant to root for. Billo smiles, says she has changed, and is quietly cruel. After episode 4, viewer reactions singled out the way Mahira plays that menace through a smile rather than shouting.

The "Lady Zamil" nickname comes from another 2026 hit, ARY Digital's Dar-e-Nijaat, where Nameer Khan's Zamil became infamous for claiming to have reformed while still throwing people's pasts back at them. When Billo did the same to Bala in episode 3, viewers made the connection instantly, and the joke has followed her since.

The timing makes the choice more interesting. Mahira Khan is in all three of the highest-grossing Pakistani films ever, including this year's crime comedy Aag Lagay Basti Mein, where critics praised her for playing against type. She could have returned to TV with a safe romance. Instead, she picked the villain of a violent Punjabi period drama. Pakistani TV's leading women rarely take that kind of risk with their image.

Is Mitti De Baway worth watching? Our early take

Four episodes is too early for a final verdict on a drama built around a mystery; this section will change as the story does.

A period setting, a dual timeline, Punjabi dialogue and a female villain at the centre are each a harder sell than the usual city drawing-room drama, and Green Entertainment chose all four. So far the response suggests the gamble is working. Early reviews keep coming back to how cinematic it looks, how the two timelines pull you towards the past, and how both leads are cast against expectation: Mahira as the villain, and Wahaj Ali playing Bala with a restraint fans don't usually see from him.

One thing to know before you start: the opening episodes are violent, and some scenes are graphic for prime-time Pakistani TV. If that's not for you, this probably isn't either.

What decides it from here is the payoff. A drama built on a sixteen-year gap has to make the answer worth waiting for. It also needs to show why Billo became who she is, or Mahira's menace will flatten into a stock vamp; it needs to resist the usual Pakistani habit of stretching a strong premise over too many episodes (the total hasn't been announced); and it needs the 1990s timeline, where Aena Khan and Fazal Hussain have been a real surprise, to stay as strong as the present.

Director Syed Wajahat Hussain is also behind Lahu, the upcoming Geo drama with Bilal Abbas Khan and Sajal Aly, so how this one lands will say a lot about what to expect there. For more of what's on air right now, see our Pakistani drama coverage.
